In the last two decades, and in particular the past ten years, great advances in neuroimaging and the neurosciences have begun to emerge that have corroborated many tenets of Primal theory and therapy. This validation has been particularly true when it comes to the healing power of feelings and emotions. Today, feeling-based and body-centered psychotherapies are beginning to merge with more "mainstream" psychology and "conventional" treatments.
When it comes to successful trauma treatment, contemporary research strongly suggests that therapies that access the right hemisphere or "feeling side" of the brain are superior to traditional cognitive-based "talk" therapies. It is this therapeutic access to non-verbal states that is essential for true healing and integration to take place. In addition, the profound imprint and importance of early experience including birth, bonding, and attachment and their effects on the developing fetus and infant are also coming to the forefront.
Listed on the following pages are reading resources based not only on Primal theory and therapy; but other theories, therapies, and research which may prove valuable as reading material. The most intriguing aspect of current research is that there is a consensus developing among professionals in psychology, neurobiology, and the healing arts on the nature of emotions, the body, and the brain, and how these psychoneurobiological components merge during the psychotherapeutic process. It's an exciting and validating time for those of us who have been fortunate enough to have been part of Primal Therapy over the years!
