As quoted from Webster's American Family Dictionary (1998 Edition).
pri-mal (pri´mal): adj. 1. First; original; primeval: 2. Of first importance; chief; fundamental. [Medieval Latin primalis, from Latin, primus, first].
Introduction:
A transformative journey into the core of the self, Primal Therapy is not for everyone. Rather, Primal Therapy works best for those who desire to connect to the truth and vitality of their inner beings through the difficult, yet immensely rewarding work of processing deep feelings and body sensations. In today's world of managed care, many popular psychotherapies, such as brief therapy, solution-focused, or cognitive-behavioral treatments, emphasize "symptom-relief" as the primary goal. Conversely, "symptom-relief" is a natural by-product and not the ultimate goal of the Primal process. The ultimate goal of the Primal Process is to help clients discover who they really are and to feel connection, feel life, and feel themselves.
Not a "quick fix", Primal Therapy is an established, yet highly innovative approach to personal growth and healing. For over 30 years, this particular modality of psychotherapy has yielded impressive results for thousands of clients, worldwide. The Primal process has been especially effective for those who were previously involved with more conventional counseling or traditional "talk therapy", and upon completion still felt as though there were major areas of "unfinished business".
That said, many people who come to primal therapy are relatively new to psychotherapy and have only a vague, diffuse sense of what is they are seeking. Some of the most common ways that this search is expressed are: "that something is wrong", "that something isn't quite right", that life is "empty" or "meaningless". Or they may express that they are "having trouble in relationships" or "don't have relationships" or feel as if the "world and life are passing them by". Sometimes new clients seek therapy because of a lifelong struggle with anxiety or depression, but most of the time it simply an awareness that is constantly tugging at them that something is wrong in their lives.
People who are attracted to the primal healing process generally have an intuitive instinct that simply talking about a problem won't work and that addressing only surface issues (or as I say rearranging the furniture on the deck of the Titanic) is doomed to failure. The word "primal" means first, and, in most cases, one must get to the source or origins of the presenting issues or problems or an individual's lifetime will be spent on "furniture rearranging"! Primal Therapy gets you to the source.
